We celebrate the Sunday closest to July 4th as “FREEDOM SUNDAY.” Freedom means different things to different people. Some seek the freedom to do whatever they want, whenever they want, however they want. To be free from restrictions, inhibitions, and rules.
Freedom means different things to different people. Some seek the freedom to do whatever they want, whenever they want, however they want. To be free from restrictions, inhibitions, and rules.
But because of our sinful human nature, we inevitably abuse such freedom and it leads to sin, suffering, and death. God’s word teaches us about a different kind of freedom. Rather than freedom through independence, we can have true freedom only through complete dependence upon God. John 8:31-32 says, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
True freedom is only possible by knowing the truth about ourselves, our world, and our God. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus is the ultimate truth, and only through a personal relationship with Him can we truly be free from the effects of sin and death. “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 As you celebrate our nation’s freedom this Independence Day, may we declare our complete dependence upon the One who created us, sustains us, and who died and rose again so that we could be free in heaven with Him for all eternity.
