Higher in Christ, Deeper in Faith, Wider in Love

I'm New

Welcome

East Main Street Christian Church is a place where people can meet Jesus,  engage in life-giving community, and everyone is welcome. Who are we?

East Main St. Christian Church was organized in 1852 under the leadership of a circuit pastor named Dr. Silas Blount.  The church had 18 charter members and met in a barn belonging to William Harmon.  In 1854, a “meeting house” was constructed on the east bank of Big Duck Creek.  In 1893, the church employed the first resident minister, George W. Alford, and the church grew to a membership of 240.  This explosive growth led to the construction of a new church building in 1899 located on the corner of 18th and Main Streets, which is still in use today. Since then the building has been expanded three times – an annex was added onto the sanctuary in 1914, the education building in 1956, and most recently the new addition in 2008. For 166 years, God has blessed the church with faithful people, strong leadership, and a desire to be a living witness for Christ in the world. We celebrate our heritage while looking forward to a future filled with hope and promise.

Today, we operate to live out our mission statement:
“We exist to bring people higher in Christ through worship, deeper in faith through study, and wider in love through mission and service.”

What do I wear?

Come as you are!
It is not uncommon to see people wearing shorts in the summer, sports jerseys in their team’s season, or jeans and t-shirts. Of course, no one is going to complain if you come in your nicest suits and outfits.

Where do I go?

If you are looking for where to go for services Sunday morning, this is where you can find things:

9:30 Service--the Big Room

This service features the contemporary music of our Praise band, led by Raphael Starr. We meet in the Big Room, just inside the main entrance to the building. We sit at round tables throughout the big room.  There is a varying number of people who attend this service.  It is a medium to large gathering each week.  Roger Gardner, Greg Boyland, and Raphael Starr lead the preaching ministry.

11:00 Service--Sanctuary

This service is our blended worship service, using the music of praise choruses and hymns, accompanied by the piano and pipe organ.  Like the contemporary service, this gathering can be medium to large each week.  Teaching is led by Senior Pastor Roger Gardner.

Youth Group

The Youth Group meets at 6 p.m. on Sundays across “A” Street in the Cave. If you are entering the building, turn around and cross the street.
